Canada and the U.S.’s relationship has changed from partners to competitors when it comes to energy production, said former Canadian government minister Jim Prentice.

But during a discussion with former U.S. secretary of energy Dr. Steven Chu about North America’s energy future at a Calgary Chamber of Commerce luncheon Friday, he said he hopes the two nations can work together past the Keystone XL Pipeline issue.

“I hope at the end of the day President Obama sees it as a U.S. national interest,” Prentice said of the pipeline.
