UPDATE: Police probe shooting death of man downtown

A 30-year-old man is dead after a shooting early Saturday in downtown Hamilton.

Emergency crews were called to the area of King Street West and Caroline Street at 3:15 for reports of a stabbing.

An altercation had broken out between two groups of men outside Vida La Pita, a takeout restaurant. Things "quickly escalated" police say, and one man produced a handgun.
Tyler Johnson, 30, was shot.

He was rushed to Hamilton General Hospital, but didn't make it. When paramedics arrived on scene, they were given the information that he was stabbed.

A pope’s pointed message

By , Published: November 28

By , Published: November 28

Some people continue to defend trickle-down theories, which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world. This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naive trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system. Meanwhile, the excluded are still waiting.”

That passage is not from some Occupy Wall Street manifesto. It was written by Pope Francis in a stunning new treatise on the Catholic Church’s role in society — and it is a powerful reminder that, however tiresome the political trench warfare in Washington may be, we have a duty to fight on.

Picture perfectThe full implementation of Obamacare matters. Raising the minimum wage matters. Reforming a financial system that, as Francis noted, “rules rather than serves” matters. Hearing the anguished voices of those left hopeless by poverty matters; answering their pleas with education, health care and employment matters even more.
Francis, the first Jesuit and first non-European in the modern era to be named pope, clearly intends to make a real difference in the world — too much of a difference, it appears, for some conservatives: Sarah Palin, a born-again Christian who attends a nondenominational church, said recently that Francis’s open-arms attitude on social issues .

Defence minister says three military suicides in one week ‘very troubling

By

DEFENCE MINISTERAdrian Wyld,The Canadian PressDefence Minister Rob Nicholson

OTTAWA Beyond expressions of sympathy, the Harper government and the Canadian Forces appeared at a loss Thursday to explain a number of suicides this week among veterans of the war in Afghanistan.

The latest case, which occurred within the last couple of days, involved a senior non-commissioned officer at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa, northwest of Ottawa. Military police are investigating and have not released any details, including the officer's name.

A Defence Department investigation into two other deaths in Western Canada is underway, a sombre and visibly moved Defence Minister Rob Nicholson told the House of Commons.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and colleagues of these departed individuals, and I wish all those associated with those individuals peace during this difficult time," Nicholson said.

Randall Hopley faces life in jail for B.C. child abduction

By

CRANBROOK, B.C. A convicted child abductor could spend the rest of his life in prison if a British Columbia Supreme Court judge declares him a dangerous offender today.

More than two years after Randall Hopley abducted a three-year-old boy from his home in Sparwood, B.C., Justice Heather Holmes is to deliver her decision on the Crown's application to keep Hopley in prison indefinitely.

Hopley could be declared a long-term offender instead. That would mean a regular sentence combined with a specific period of supervision in the community afterwards of up to 10 years.

Clairmont: Suspended cop Doel expected to retire

Inspector David Doel, the high-ranking Hamilton cop who has raked in more than $500,000 while suspended with pay, is expected to announce his retirement today, The Spectator has learned.

DOEL

Scott Gardner, The Hamilton Spectator
David Doel

He is 10 months shy of his full pension eligibility date. And almost all of his best five years of service, upon which his pension is calculated, will actually have occurred while he has been suspended with pay.

Doel's announcement should end, once and for all, a four-year milking of the police disciplinary system that has allowed him — with assistance from his lawyer Harry Black — to stall and delay his hearing.

While under suspension he has continued to be paid well over $100,000 each year while continuing to accrue vacation time and sick days and receive pay raises.

Time to learn the difference between a nigger and a black person.

Put your ignorance aside. The link I will post at the end is worth watching. Am getting sick of hearing outright ignorance, racism, outright lying.

I have listened to both Americans and Canadians lump all black people and niggers into the same pot. Which is completely far from the truth. There is one hell of a difference between the two.

Do I Support niggers? No. But I do support black people? Yes.

How many of you even know the difference? One who thinks outside the box do clearly know the difference. Don't deny it, think about it. Don't play stupid, also think about it. Don't act based on what others tell you, think for yourselves, if you can.

This video you may see as funny, but it is not. It is completely true, it takes another black man to make it clear and undeniable. Some may need to listen more then once, so do so, to understand the truth. Don't run away from it, don't ignore it, learn from it. Open your minds.

For those who have read this, listened to what was said in the video respond "fuck you" I say fuck to hell off, crawl back under your rocks, the likes of those are not needed in this world today. And for those who understand, share to those who do not

November 22, 1963: Death of the President

AR8255-3D (crop) Honor Guard approaches grave site, 25 November 1963
Shortly after noon on November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated as he rode in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas, Texas.

By the fall of 1963, President John F. Kennedy and his political advisers were preparing for the next presidential campaign. Although he had not formally announced his candidacy, it was clear that President Kennedy was going to run and he seemed confident about his chances for re-election.

At the end of September, the president traveled west, speaking in nine different states in less than a week. The trip was meant to put a spotlight on natural resources and conservation efforts. But JFK also used it to sound out themes—such as education, national security, and world peace—for his run in 1964.

Obituary: Alexander Litvinenko

Alexander Litvinenko, a former Russian security officer who has died in a London hospital after apparently being poisoned, was a fierce critic of Russia's government.

Born in the Russian city of Voronezh, Mr Litvinenko first became a security agent in the FSB's predecessor, the Soviet-era KGB, after transferring from the military. He rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel.

He is reported to have fallen out with Russian President Vladimir Putin, then head of the FSB, in the late 1990s, after failing to crack down on corruption within the organisation.

The nature of his job, as a specialist in fighting organised crime, meant he would certainly have made enemies.

 Murder investigation

Intelligence analyst Glenmore Trenear Harvey said of his friend: "He headed up one of the internal investigations branches that was looking into the corruption and coercion that was going on within the Russian intelligence service so he made a lot of enemies way back then."

Who was Alexander Litvinenko?

The row over whether to hold an inquest or a public inquiry into the death of Alexander Litvinenko rumbles on. But who was he and why did his death become such a cause celebre?

Alexander Litvinenko
Alexander Litvinenko fell ill after a meeting with former KGB contacts in London in 2006

Before he was poisoned and died in November 2006, few outside Russia had ever heard of Alexander Litvinenko.

A 43-year-old former officer with the Federal Security Service (FSB), Mr Litvinenko had become a useful, if not entirely reliable, source for journalists interested in the machinations of Vladimir Putin's Russia.
But it has since emerged the Russian spy was being paid by both the British secret service MI6 and the Spanish secret service.

He was allegedly investigating Spanish links to the Russian mafia, and had planned to fly to Spain with the main suspect for his murder, Andrei Lugovoi.

Mr Litvinenko's name made its way into infamy after he took tea with Mr Lugovoi and another Russian contact Dmitri Kovtun at a central London hotel on 1 November 2006.

He fell ill soon afterwards and spent the night vomiting.
Three days later he was admitted to Barnet General Hospital in north London, where his condition gradually became a cause for concern.

On 11 November he was interviewed by the BBC Russian Service and said he was in "very bad shape" after a "serious poisoning".

  • 31 May 2007 - Mr Lugovoi denies any involvement in his death but says Mr Litvinenko was a British spy
  • 5 Jul 2007 - Russia officially refuses to extradite Mr Lugovoi, saying its constitution does not allow it
  • 16 Jul 2007 - Britain expels four Russian diplomats, and three days later Moscow retaliates by kicking out four British diplomats
  • 20 Sept 2012 - Pre-inquest review hears that Russia's links to the death will be probed
  • 13 Dec 2012 - Legal review told that Mr Litvinenko was a paid worker for MI6
  • May-June 2013 - Inquest into Mr Litvinenko's death delayed as coroner decides a public inquiry would be preferable, as it would be able to hear some evidence in secret
  • July 2013 - Ministers rule out public inquiry

Natalie Wood's drowning death reclassified by Los Angeles coroner

Report now raises possibility that actress who died in 1981 was assaulted before drowning and adds details to night's events

Los Angeles county coroners have reignited the mystery over Natalie Wood's death by concluding she may have been assaulted before drowning in the sea in 1981, a death which has haunted Hollywood ever since.

A report released on Monday showed that coroner's officials have raised the possibility of foul play because of previously overlooked bruises found on the actor's wrists and upper body.

The report, released after a "security hold" by sheriff's officials, stopped short of classifying the death as a homicide, saying key pieces of evidence were missing. Instead of accidental drowning Wood's death is now classified as "drowning and other undetermined factors".

A sheriff's spokesman, Steve Whitmore, said the agency has known about the report since last year and that it did not change the status of the investigation, which remained open.

Uncovered Lord Lucan files give 'vivid account of 1974 murder'

For 38 years some of Fleet Street's finest have chased the story of missing peer of the realm Lord Lucan.
He vanished on 7 November 1974 when his children's nanny was found dead in Belgravia, London.

And at the centre of the story was a detective from Kent called David "Buster" Gerring.

In charge of the hunt for Lord Lucan, Det Ch Insp Gerring courted journalists and reporters in the knowledge he needed their publicity to help officers track down the missing aristocrat and solve the murder of Sandra Rivett.

Over the years as the trail went colder and colder he stock-piled his personal notes, diaries and case papers in three boxes at his home to Tunbridge Wells.

David "Buster" Gerring
David "Buster" Gerring courted journalists in a bid to trace Lord Lucan

When Mr Gerring died in 2004, those sealed boxes were passed to his daughter, Davina Chambers, who tucked them away in a corner of her loft at home in Sussex.

They lay there forgotten and gathering dust until September 2012 when a friend's throw away remark that the BBC was investigating the disappearance of Lord Lucan jolted Ms Chambers' memory about her father's documents.

The friend, who saw the items and realised their potential importance, contacted me and suggested that I take a look.

All Ms Chambers said on the phone was that she "may have something that would be helpful" and as I walked up the drive to her home just outside Lewes I did not know what to expect.

Lord Lucan plastic surgeon medical note auctioned

Lord Lucan medical notes
The notes read: "Struck nose on steering wheel of boat... profuse bleeding

A medical card filled in by a plastic surgeon after Lord Lucan broke his nose in a speedboat accident has sold for £100.

Dr John Watson of Harley Street detailed the aristocrat's injuries and drew a sketch of his nose. It sold at Duke's Auctioneers, in Dorchester.

The 7th Earl of Lucan vanished in 1974 after his children's nanny was killed.

His cousin Victor Bingham said the notes could be valuable for any future investigations into his disappearance.

"If they ever find the body, that would be a very important clue to help identify him," he added.
The note, written in 1963, refers to Lord Lucan by his real name, Richard John Bingham, and his then age of 28.

It reads: "Struck nose on steering wheel of boat... profuse bleeding at time.

 Lord Lucan
Lord Lucan was officially declared dead in 1999

  Soaked in blood'

"Now - Laceration floor of nose Rv. Vestibule. Compound dislocated septum with fragment projecting into Rt vestibule.
"Nasal lanes appear intact."

The medical notes sold at the Dorset auctioneers for £100, plus a buyer's premium of 19.5% and VAT.
While it had a guide price of between £100 and £200, spokeswoman Amy Brennan was surprised it did not go for more.

She said: "There's so much interest in all things related to Lord Lucan.
"I thought it was exciting that if his body ever came to light it would be a fantastic way of identifying him if they x-rayed his nose. It could become really, really important.

"The fact that his surgeon kept the notes is also intriguing."

Nanny Sandra Rivett was found dead at the home of Lord Lucan's estranged wife in the Belgravia area of London in 1974.

Lady Lucan was also attacked but managed to escape.

Lord Lucan disappeared and his car was later found abandoned and soaked in blood in Newhaven, East Sussex.
A year later an inquest jury ruled that Lord Lucan killed Ms Rivett, whom many believe he mistook for his wife Veronica.

Lord Lucan was officially declared dead by the High Court in 1999.
Since his disappearance at the age of 39, there have been more than 70 reported sightings of him in countries across the world including South Africa, Australia, Ireland and the Netherlands.

Melissa Jane Letain - February 13, 1987 - Age 24 - Murdered - Edmonton

Melissa Jane Letain
Age: 24
COD: Strangled
DOB:
Date last seen: February 13, 1987
Location last seen: Edmonton, AB
Date found: February 14, 1987
Location found: Genesee, AB

Melissa Jane Letain - February 13, 1987 - Age 24 - Murdered - Edmonton - Melissa was last seen leaving work at a popular West Edmonton Mall hair salon where she worked as a hair stylist. She was carrying Valentine's gifts for her boyfriend. It is believed someone abducted her from the walkway leading to her apartment which was right across the street from WEM.

Her body was found the next day 75km SW of Edmonton under the Genesse Bridge on the ice of the North Saskatchewan River. She was spotted by a 14 year-old boy and his friends. An autopsy revealed she died of asphyxiation, ligature strangulation. The killer used a hangman's noose made of 7 coils which is a deviation from the standard 13 coils. He used what looks like standard 1/4" yellow nylon rope.

Items of Melissa's never recovered was a CN Trucking key chain (those clear rectangular acrylic keychains) with a single key, a woman's gold tone watch with a rectangular face, a blue leather or leather looking woman's wallet and a green clutch purse with a gold clasp.

The video showed a flash of a witness description issued of Melissa's killer. The description said: White male, 6' tall, slim to medium build, dark hair swept back at the sides, dark pants and what appears to be a black and grey jacket, bottom half black (or dark) and the top half grey (or light).

Melissa was recovered from the middle of the ice under the Genesee Bridge. The killer abducted her and threw her body off the bridge onto the ice below. The Genesse Bridge is on Highway 770 which leads to the Genesee power generating station. Back in the day, I heard, Genesee used to provide rental housing for their employees. I don't remember what year they stopped doing that, but I think in 1987 it was the case.

Wabamum Lake is the big lake one can see Genesee borders. This lake is often not frozen in parts because the water spoils from the plant is heated when it's dumped into the lake. Ducks stay in that part all year. I wonder if the killer thought the ice would be thin enough, due to heating, and Melissa would go through.

Melissa's friend said in the video he thinks it's someone known to Melissa. He is not a suspect. There is DNA profile retrieved in about 1997 and it's being put or has been put into the database. I really have no clue how this database works.

This is all the information I could get from the video. There is more information about Melissa and the people who knew her and found her at this link provided in another thread:

'I wrapped the president's exploded head in my jacket': Jackie Kennedy's secret service agent relives horrifying moments after JFK was assassinated.

By Daily Mail Reporter
|

The secret service agent employed to protect Jackie Kennedy has recounted the terror following the president's assassination in 1963, and how he wrapped John F. Kennedy's shot head in his jacket.
Speaking on the Today show, Clint Hill, now 80, recounted his determination to throw himself between the Kennedys and the bullets as parts of the president's brain and skull splattered over his shirt.
When a third bullet hit the president's head and the motorcade sped to hospital, Hill said the First Lady refused to leave the car, fearful that onlookers would see her husband's horrific injuries.

On the lookout: Hill, dressed in black and sunglasses, can be seen standing on a vehicle's running board as President Kennedy drives through the streets of Dallas, Texas before the shooting

Horrifying moment: A different angle shows Hill climbing towards Mrs Kennedy, who is leaning over her husband slumped in the back of the car. Hill says she was reaching for part of his skull
Horrifying: Hill climbs towards Mrs Kennedy, who he says was reaching for part of her husband's skull

Hill is the figure in the famous Zapruder film of the shooting which shows him climbing onto the back of the president's limousine as it continues to move.

As he moved towards Mrs Kennedy, he watched her reaction: 'Her eyes were filled with terror,' he wrote. 'She was reaching for something. She was reaching for a piece of the President's head.'
Before he could reach them, two more bullets were shot - the final one hitting the president in the head, just above his right ear.
'The impact was like the sound of a melon shattering onto cement,' he remembered, adding that the President's blood and parts of his skull splattered over his clothes, face and hair.
Pulling Mrs Kennedy, as he always called her, into her seat, the president's body fell into her arms with his eyes open. 'Jack, Jack, what have they done to you?' she wailed.

WELLAND, Ont. — Two Canadians are out of Russian prisons, but it's not clear if they are able to leave the country.

Early Friday, Greenpeace said all those charged with hooliganism for taking part in a protest on an oil platform in the Arctic could leave Russia.

"Upon posting of the bond, the vessel and all persons are allowed to leave the territory of Russia," Greenpeace tweeted Friday.

But a family member says that's not the case.

Paul Ruzycki, 48, of Port Colborne, Ont., and Alexandre Paul, 36, of Montreal walked out of detention centres Friday after being granted bail earlier this week.

OTTAWA - Prime Minister Stephen Harper gave a blunt denial when asked Friday whether he or his office approved having Sen. Irving Gerstein call a friend at Deloitte to check into an audit of Sen. Mike Duffy’s expense claims.

“No,” Harper said Friday, before turning the focus back to Duffy and the prime minister’s former chief of staff, Nigel Wright, and the deal that saw Wright give Duffy the money to repay $90,000 in improper expense claims plus interest.

“There are two individuals who are under investigation for an improper payment that was not disclosed — Mr. Duffy and Mr. Wright, and that’s how it should be,” Harper said.

A PMO spokesman later tried to correct Harper’s denial, saying he was “only answering for himself” and not his office.

Canada and the U.S.’s relationship has changed from partners to competitors when it comes to energy production, said former Canadian government minister Jim Prentice.

But during a discussion with former U.S. secretary of energy Dr. Steven Chu about North America’s energy future at a Calgary Chamber of Commerce luncheon Friday, he said he hopes the two nations can work together past the Keystone XL Pipeline issue.

“I hope at the end of the day President Obama sees it as a U.S. national interest,” Prentice said of the pipeline.

OTTAWA - NDP Leader Tom Mulcair is disturbed by the sexual harassment allegations against Sen. Colin Kenny and says Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau needs to give a better explanation of why his party waited so long to take action against the senator.

"These are very troubling and serious allegations," Mulcair told QMI Agency. "Justin Trudeau, as leader of the Liberal party, needs to explain why it took so long to do anything about Colin Kenny, a member of his own caucus."

A former Kenny staffer sent two letters of complaint about his personal conduct. She alleged he made sexual comments, touched her waist during conversations in his office and asked her to drink at his house.
